Design and implementation of online teaching of English in elementary school in the context of the COVID-19

 

Under the influence of the COVID-19 epidemic, students’ English teaching has been shifted from offline to online, so the new teaching methods make both students and teachers face new challenges, which are manifested in various aspects and deserve deep consideration by teachers and the education sector [1]. This paper analyzes the online teaching of English reading in elementary schools under the COVID-19 epidemic in order to explore the design research and teaching summary of online teaching of English in elementary schools, so as to make a contribution to the development of online teaching of English in elementary schools in special times.

A sudden epidemic has completely turned the way of education and learning upside down. Online teaching was developed as a way to respond to the learning needs of students in a special period. For teachers, the lack of equipment, the lack of experience in online teaching, how to assess the learning effect and how to correct homework have all become challenges that must be faced. In response to the government’s call to help teachers teach, English teachers in elementary school are actively exploring and practicing, making full use of online resource platforms to properly carry out online education and teaching during the epidemic prevention and control period. The teaching of English reading in elementary schools is of great importance to students’ future English learning, so the teaching of English reading to students during the epidemic should not be easily ignored. English teachers need to analyze the key contents of each teaching section in the textbook on the basis of understanding students’ learning data, skillfully set up teaching links, flexibly use platforms such as Super Star Learning Pass, U Campus, Tencent Classroom, MU video and QQ group for online teaching, and at the same time use various forms of teacher-student interaction and student-student interaction to activate the classroom atmosphere and strengthen student control to ensure that the quality of online English reading teaching. The design and implementation of online teaching of English in elementary school in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic:

1) Overcoming the problems of online teaching and exercising students’ self-learning ability.

There are many online English reading materials, but although there are abundant online materials, materials that are fully integrated with the actual lives of primary school students need to be screened by teachers, and since the learning situation is not the same in each specific school and class, teachers must arrange the actual teaching contents according to the actual situation of students in their own classes. English teachers take the time to collect reasonable curriculum resources and combine them with actual educational examples in order to provide students with more intimate. For example, primary English unit three my friends, the teaching focus of the course is the sentence pattern, what’s his name, his name is? he has…… English teachers must combine the network resources to find video materials that can be played, and at the same time should let students from reading The English teachers must find video materials that can be played in conjunction with online resources, and at the same time they should let students draw knowledge from reading the text and deepen their understanding in cases that are integrated with real life.

The use of course materials to add appropriate teaching aids, teaching aids, matching teaching materials and audio materials, etc., can be used as auxiliary materials for the teaching process, that is, the application of interesting dialogue to guide, for example, to do a guess who is the game: Who is your best friend further derivation and add similar questions to introduce knowledge points, let students read the video and reading text Conduct self-analysis and conclude: She is my best friend, her name is …

2) Give full play to the advantages of online teaching and innovative forms of reading teaching

The design and teaching of English teachers’ online courses need to be closely based on the “student-centered” English teaching concept, which requires English teachers to grasp students’ performance, understand students’ needs and feedback in real time, establish a good feedback mechanism of English online classes and create a harmonious and pleasant teaching atmosphere. In the online English classroom, English teachers can use different expressions to allow students to exercise their thinking skills in the process of learning. The first step in reading English is to make independent guesses and judgments about the headlines and pictures in the text, i.e., “predicting”, which means making guesses about what is likely to happen next in the English text [2]. For example, in the question “What do you think the facts are”, English teachers need to guide students to understand the general meaning of the text, so as to deepen their impressions and improve their English reading skills in the process of learning.

3) Improving the effectiveness of online teaching and enriching reading teaching content. The development of online English teaching is an opportunity for some students to avoid learning English, because this part of the students’ psychological resistance to learning English, thinking that it is a relatively boring course, escaping from the situation of having to listen to lectures in the English classroom, the beginning of online teaching is an opportunity for them to avoid learning English, so how to change students’ attitudes and views on learning English, and actively improve Therefore, it is important to change students’ attitudes and perceptions about learning English and to actively increase their motivation and initiative in learning English. As an English teacher, you need to actively explore and open your mind, start from both teacher-student interaction and student-student interaction, and adopt a variety of clever means and methods to achieve all-round control of students’ learning status before, during and after class to ensure the best learning experience and learning effect for students. English teachers need to ensure the quality of online English teaching while minimizing students’ classroom anxiety, so that every student can actively participate in interactive communication in online English classes. In an online English classroom with “Open your mind; Open your heart; Open your mouth” as the teaching philosophy, every student can enjoy reading English.

In conclusion, in this particular period of the epidemic, it is a pleasant surprise that students are able to know more clearly what they want and what they should do by learning to read English through online education. As a basic project to modernize education, online education has not only catalyzed changes in the way students learn English and the professional skills of English teachers, but has also put the development of online class platforms and the online education industry as a whole to a new test.
